چکیده

I outline some of the most recent developments in the global fit to parton distributions performed by the MRST collaboration. At present there is a great deal of interest in the importance of parton distributions for studies at the LHC. This necessarily involves a certain kinematic range for the partons. The kinematic range for particle production at the LHC is shown in fig. 1. Parton distributions at x ∼ 0.001− 0.01 are vital for understanding the standard production processes at the LHC. However, even smaller (and higher) x partons are required when one moves away from zero rapidity, e.g. when calculating the total production crosssection of the heavy boson. As well as the central values one needs the uncertainties on the partons, and there has been a lot of work on this [1]–[9]. This uncertainty is shown for the ū and d̄ quarks in fig. 2. Central rapidity production of W,Z Higgs at the LHC probes x = 0.006, which is ideal for the MRST partons. Parton Distributions: Progress and Challenges

We briefly discuss recent research on the spin-averaged parton densities of the proton, focusing on some aspects relevant to hard processes at the LHC. Specifically, after recalling the basic framework and the need for higher-order calculations, we address the evolution equations governing the scale dependence of the parton distributions and their solution, schemes for initial conditions and th...

Precision QED⊗QCD Resummation Theory for LHC Physics: IR-Improved Scheme for Parton Distributions, Kernels, Reduced Cross Sections with Shower/ME Matching

We summarize the recent progress in a new approach to precision LHC physics based on the IR-improved DGLAP-CS theory as it relates to a new MC friendly exponentiated scheme for precision calculation of higher order corrections to LHC physics in which IR singularities from both QED and QCD are canceled to all orders in α and in αs simultaneously in the presence of rigorous shower/ME matching. We...

Jet correlations from unintegrated parton distributions

Transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions can be introduced gaugeinvariantly in QCD from high-energy factorization. We discuss Monte Carlo applications of these distributions to parton showers and jet physics, with a view to the implications for the Monte Carlo description of complex hadronic final states with multiple hard scales at the LHC.

Higgs Production at the Lhc: an Updated Signal-to-background Analysis

This paper follows Ref. 1], where updated calculations of cross sections and branching ratios relevant for Standard Model Higgs phenomenology at the LHC were presented. Here, we complete that study by carrying out an updated signal-to-background analysis. We present results obtained by using exact matrix element computations at parton level for all processes, by exploiting the most recent parto...

Structure Functions and Parton Distributions

I review recent progress in the determination of the parton structure of the nucleon, in particular from deep-inelastic structure functions. I explain how the needs of current and future precision phenomenology, specifically at the LHC, have turned the determination of parton distributions into a quantitative problem. I describe the results and difficulties of current approaches and ideas to go...
